WOB duo added to Makos squad

Kaide Whiting and Billy Guyton are two late inclusions in the Tasman Makos squad for the 2013 ITM Cup campaign.

The Waimea Old Boys duo join James Lowe and Tevita Cabuvati in the team which was officially announced this week.

Kaide, 22, has been a regular feature at halfback for Waimea since leaving school and represented the Makos on five occasions back in 2010. With a season ending injury ruling Shawn Begg out of contention, Kaide has been given the nod to challenge incumbent halfback Mark Swanepool who arrives via the Brumbies and a stint with Canterbury.

Kaide, who played alongside Billy, James and fellow Makos Mitchell Scott and Tom Marshall in the 2008 Nelson College first XV, says he was looking forward to getting another shot at ITM Cup level. “I’ve set myself the goal to push for the number one spot and I think the squad is looking pretty sharp.”

Meanwhile the Waimate born Billy, 23, has benefited from a couple of seasons in the Heartland Championship with North Otago, saying it helped him “grow up”. “When I was here last time I was probably enjoying being young just a little bit too much,” he says. “I went down there to get some exposure but it helped me grow up as a player and just mature more.”

Billy decided to return to Nelson for this year’s club rugby season and the move has clearly paid off, being named as one of six newcomers in the Makos squad. “I wasn’t confident [I’d make the squad] but I was willing to work for it. It’s a big thing and you don’t get many chances at this level.”

Although capable of playing a number of positions in the backline, Billy sees himself as more of a first five, and will contest the number ten jersey with Hayden Cripps and another newcomer, Mike Wells.

The season begins on August 17.
