Art Expo Nelson is returning to the Trafalgar Centre this weekend and organisers are promising it will be even bigger and better than last year’s inaugural event.
With more than 3000 people visiting last year’s Art Expo Nelson it was immediately recognised as the biggest art expo in the South Island. But Nic Foster, Annie Leather and Louise Allan say there will be more artists, more visitors and more activities at this year’s expo. “We have 118 artists this year, up 20 on last year, and we have a space where children can have a go at creating their own masterpiece with Pammie Moonlight in the Victory room,” says Louise. “We’re hoping for 5000 to come through the expo over the three days.”
The trio behind the event say they were thrilled with the response to it last year and say they decided not long after it to go again this year.
“We had 100 per cent positive response from the artists and the feedback from them was ‘yep, make it an annual thing’,” says Louise.
The group were successful in their bid for a Nelson City Council grant and say they’re pleased with the number of people coming from outside the region. “We have 35 artists from outside Nelson and Tasman and we already know of people coming from Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch so hopefully it can attract not just local people but people from around the country.”
As well as the hundreds of artworks selling from one hundred dollars to several thousand, organisers say there are plenty of other activities including a café and bar where people can take a break or discuss which piece to buy.
Art Expo Nelson runs from Friday, July 12, to Sunday, July 14. It opens each day at 10am.
