Unbeaten rivals to clash

This weekend’s Battle of the Bridge should decide first round honours in the Car Company division one rugby competition.
Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys will face Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers on the back of an impressive 36-14 win over Galbraith Group Nelson on Saturday and both sides go into the mouth watering clash undefeated.
Wanderers spent last weekend resting with the bye.
Waimea Old Boys captain James Lowe says his side “has to be confident” going into the match.
“We’re not going to be giving it up easily that’s for sure,” he says. “You can’t go into a game not confident so we’re going to be out there with a hiss and a roar.”
He is expecting a tough match-up, with Wanderers tipped to be the favourites going into the season, recruiting well and adding to the strong squad it brought back into the top division last year. “There’s going to be a lot of passion but we’ve got to go in confident and I think we can do the job. I just can’t wait to get out there. They’re a good side but we should have the firepower.”
Buoyed by being at the top of the table, James wanted the team to embrace its confidence and hold onto it for as long as possible. “It’s not something we’ve had for awhile but now that we’re top of the table it’s something that we really want to build on. We don’t want to let it slip.”
James admits the side “only played 40 minutes of rugby” on the weekend, as it kept Nelson scoreless in a dominant second half display. “That next 40 minutes we were definitely on the right foot going forward.”
With less teams this year there was an expectation that the quality had risen. So when questioned on what makes Waimea the benchmark in a tough season, James was hesitant. “I wouldn’t say we’re necessarily better. I guess we’ve done our homework and we know what we need to do. We’ve got a good foundation of players that have come back and I guess.”
The winner of this weekend’s game will not only hold the lead after the first round, but will continue a winning streak.
This weekend’s match kicks off at the Brightwater Domain at 3pm.
