Wanderers Wolves will enjoy the Easter break on top of the TRL standings after a comfortable 48-8 win against new boys Victory Phoenix Vikings on Saturday.

Team manager Michelle Welsh says the Wolves were wanting to start the season strong, picking up where it left off at the end of 2012. “Absolutely. We’ve got new management and new coaching staff so it’s a pretty perfect way to bring it all together,” she says.

With the entire league developing significantly each season, teams need to make sure they aren’t left behind and Michelle was confident the side would continue to be competitive despite new players making up 40 per cent of the squad. “We’ve got a lot of guys that have never played before but luckily they came at the start of pre-season and have picked it up really well and really quickly.”

After the bye the Wolves will take on the Tahunanui Tigers, who surprised defending champions the Richmond Rabbits 30-28 on the weekend. “We know it’s going to be a tough game but it will be a good one as well. We just need to work on things each week and get better as we go.”

The Stoke Cobras defeated the Wairau Taniwha 32-18 in the round’s other match. All games were played in Tahunanui.
