Nelson’s own roller derby team is kicking off another season of play and is on the hunt for new players and helpers. The Sirens of Smash are issuing a call out for ‘fresh meat’ and offering a new training course that they say is a sure fire way to get new recruits ready for action. Team spokeswoman Tara Forde says Roller Derby is a fast growing New Zealand sport with over 20 clubs nationwide and after two years of operating as the only roller derby team in the region, it’s time to get together another bunch of keen chicks and form a second team.
Tara says the 32 week course is a great way for local women who have heard about roller derby and want to give it a go or simply want to try out a new sport. “It’s a really awesome way to get fit, learn to skate and have a great time doing a new sport amongst a new group of friends.”
Tara encourages anybody to give it a go and says you don’t have to be an expert skater to join the team. “A lot of the current members hadn’t picked up their skates since they were kids before they started, it’s easy to learn and heaps of fun.”
The team is also seeking other new members to join as referees and non-skating officials for the upcoming season.
The beginners classes will start towards March 11 and will be held at the Tahunanui Skate Rink once a week, on a week night. Those interested in joining as a player, referee or as a non-skating official can head down to the rink to see what it’s all about or email [email protected] For further information you can also view www.sirensofsmash.co.nz or check out the teams facebook page at www.facebook.com/Sirens.of.smash.
