There were no surprises at the Tasman Secondary School Touch Championship with the big three – Nelson College, Nelson College for Girls and Waimea College – all winning their respective divisions and sealing qualification to the South Island edition.
Nelson College for Girls, which finished sixth at the national competition last year, only had to turn up to confirm its place at next month’s South Island Secondary School Championship with Marlborough Girls’ College the only other girls team entered. The pool match concluded 3-3 before NCG ran away with a 6-2 victory in the final at the Tahunanui Playing Fields. Nelson College were far too good in the boys grade, dispatching Garin College 12-1 and Marlborough Boys’ College 10-2 before sealing top spot with a 8-4 victory over the Blenheim side in the afternoon final. In between rounds, sides came up against the Nelson representative mixed side. Nelson College won its friendly 6-1 while Garin College lost 12-0.
The mixed grade, which had the most teams entered, was the also the most hotly contested with Waimea College beating Motueka High School 4-2 in the final.
