The region’s top tennis juniors under the age of nine were invited to participate at Friday’s Grasshoppers 8under Invitational Tournament.
This event, which was hosted by the Tasman Tennis Centre, is held twice a year and helps identify the top tennis juniors across the district.
The boys draw saw top seed Kvido Tayerle of the Stoke Tennis Club in a league of his own, dominating each opponent he faced with ease. Kvido went the entire tournament without dropping more than two points in each match.
Nelson Bays Tennis development officer Lynnie Nevin says Kvido showed mature composure and will be a name to look out for in the future.
Second place went to Sam Trice of Upper Moutere. Despite a 16-0 loss to Kvido in one of the earlier matches, Sam went the rest of the tournament unbeaten. The fair play award went to Max Frontiera of Wakapuaka Tennis Club.
In the girls draw, Claudia Miccio of the Stoke Tennis Club won all her matches and showed great control and strength during the tournament. Runner-up was Hannah Young, also of Stoke, who won all her matches except for the 11-4 loss to Claudia.
The fair play award went to Holly Watson of Tasman Tennis Club. The next 8under invitational tournament will be held in March next year.
