Jumping success

There were no signs of winter cobwebs as a 70-strong group of local show jumpers took to Marchwood Park in Motueka with plenty of speed, style and accuracy on Sunday.

Participation-wise, this was the largest opening competition in a number of years for the Nelson Area Show Jumping Group with numbers high in all 17 classes. Classes were spread between horses and ponies and then separated by the height of the obstacles.

The best of the local registered riders were youngster Emily Hamer of Hope in the registered pony classes riding She’s Spot On and Moonwalker the Grey; Pamela Milliken of Brightwater largely dominated the show hunter classes on Z Final Straw and Viking SL, placing in each class she competed in.

Nelson Area Show Jumping Ground spokesperson Linda Cotton, who also won two classes on Sunday, says she was stoked with the turnout, with competition running until 6pm to cater for the large amount of entries. “There are heaps of good riders in Nelson but yesterday they all came out of the woodwork,” she says.
