The Vic to get an earthquake upgrade

Another iconic Nelson building has been deemed an earthquake risk and will undergo an upgrade next month.

The Vic Brewbar will be closed for around two weeks in late July and will be disrupted over a two month period in total because of the renovations, although it will be able to open at nights during that time.

General manager of The Vic Brewbar, Phil Williams, says there is never an ideal time to put up with the disruption but he is happy with the efforts the landlords have made to accommodate them.

The Vic is the latest in several buildings around Nelson that have been closed awaiting a decision on whether they will be strengthened.

Phil says The Vic will use the opportunity to make some cosmetic upgrades in the bar at the same time.

“We’ll upgrade a few things and make it a bit nicer but generally the bar will be the same layout as it is now.”

Work on the building is due to start on July 1 and finish August 23.
