A Christmas Day lunch is being organised by the Victory Community Centre for those who would otherwise be spending the day alone.
The lunch is on from 11.30am – 1.30pm on December 25 and will be run entirely from donations.
“It’s really for those people who are lonely at Christmas,” says organiser Hana Randall, the centre’s administrator.
“It isn’t a happy time for everyone and maybe some people haven’t had a Christmas in a while, so we want to make this really lovely for them.”
She says when centre manager Rebecca Greig put the idea to her and community navigator, Jenni Bancroft, they were quick to put their hands up to help.
“As far as we know, there is nothing on like this in this area on Christmas Day. That’s why we’re doing it.”
Jenni says they have space for up to 50 people and their main goal is reaching those who have nothing on, or no one to be with on the day.
“They’re the ones who need it. We’re going to door knock in the Victory area to connect with those people.”
They’ve already had donations of a 10kg ham, supermarket vouchers and money – but they are still in need of more items.
“We will take anything. Nonalcoholic drinks, Christmas crackers, treats, fruit – or even if anyone has a few extra vegetables in their garden.”
The event is free, but anyone interested will need to come and get a ticket from the centre or contact them on 546 8389 or firstname.lastname@example.org by December 16 to secure a place.
