When Daniela Burlando and Yuri Aristarco moved to Nelson in 2011, they wanted to bring a slice of Italy with them.
Once Daniela tasted New Zealand milk, she knew she had found the key ingredient.
“It’s quite different to milk in Europe, it’s just much nicer.”
Now their company, Gelato Roma, has scored the top gelato spot for its salted caramel gelato in the 2019 New Zealand Ice Cream Awards.
The pair started selling gelato in the Richmond Mall before expanding and purchasing a production company on Vanguard St.
“It was a very natural choice, it’s part of our culture, we grew up with gelato, in summer sometimes we would have gelato for lunch.”
Daniela says the awards were great recognition for their “no tricks” methods which see them make their caramel from scratch.
Run by the New Zealand Ice Cream Manufacturers Association (NZICMA), this year’s awards attracted more than 300 entries that were judged across 13 different categories by an independent panel of expert food industry judges.
