Hilly work pays off for Emily

When Emily Olthof ’s mum suggested she take up a paper run as the 10-year-old’s first job, she was a little surprised.

But more than a year and a half into the gig, mother Helen is proud that her daughter has stuck with it.

“It’s a bit hilly, so I’m really impressed.”

Emily delivers the Nelson Weekly to Songer St and the Ridgeway and has just been selected as the newspaper’s deliverer of the month.

“It’s a little bit hard,” she admits. “But when you do it for longer it gets easier.”

However, she is enjoying the extra money in her back pocket. Emily is hoping to buy a return ticket to Auckland to visit her eldest brother.

“It will be nice to visit him.”

Weekly delivery manager Karl Hadfield says that Emily is a fantastic worker and is a worthy recipient of the award, which includes a double pass to State Cinema.

It’s just in time, too. This week is Emily’s birthday.
