As Nelson’s population gets older the RSA is looking for some younger blood to help collect donations for its annual Poppy Appeal.
Local RSA president Barry Pont says he needs about 20 people for the April 12 Poppy Day.
“We are all getting a bit older so it’s getting harder to get people out on the stand.”
And he says that the need to raise money is still there.
“There are more people in the RSA needing welfare funds now than ever before in my 25 years of doing this.”
Last year, the volunteer network recorded over 20,000 interactions around the country – helping those in need.
The theme of this year’s appeal is “We Are All Family” and seeks to raise money to help those who have served in the country’s armed services. It goes towards assisting veterans and their families who can endure ongoing hardship when they return or transition from serving.
It is the primary source of funds for the RSA’s extensive provision of support services to the service community
“For dependents and their partners, the negative impact can be significant,” Barry says.
Barry says that it’s a small way to remember the sacrifice those people have made for their country.
