More than 40 dogs and their two-legged companions blasted off from Isel Park on Sunday in an attempt to walk the distance to the moon.

The event was one of many held around the country over the weekend to officially launch SPCA’s ‘Walk Your Dog to the Moon’ campaign.

Animal lovers are encouraged to participate in jointly walking 385,500kms – the distance from earth to the moon – over the month of November, to raise funds for the SPCA.

The campaign aims to raise awareness and funds for animal cruelty.

SPCA Nelson manager Donna Walzl says it was a great opportunity for the community to get together and have a bit of fun.

She says if successful the campaign will become an annual event. Anyone wishing to register can do so at www.walktothemoon.co.nz

A $12 registration fee includes a doggy pedometer, doggy bandana and a welcome pack.
