A softball league with an emphasis on fun will get underway in Nelson later this month.

The Nelson United Softball Club are calling on players of all ages and abilities to take a swing at a varied version of the sport this spring.

In conjunction with Nelson Softball Association, the first Mixed Social ‘Slo-Pitch’ League will be played on Saturday afternoons starting on October 27.

The league will run for six weeks with game times played from midday to 1pm.

United Softball Club member Don Glenie says, as well as fun, safety will be a priority of the league.

“There won’t be any injuries unless someone doesn’t warm up and pulls a muscle.”

Teams will play a round robin leading up to the Slo-Pitch tournament (Murray Williams Classic) to be played on Saturday, December 1.

Teams will be 8-aside with a minimum of four females and basic gear is supplied on the day.

Slo-pitch is a derivative of Softball where the ball is pitched slowly (underhand) to the batter.

The emphasis of the game is on hitting and to encourage the batter to put the ball in play with no bunting or stealing.

“It’s very fluid, we can play maybe five or six innings in an hour, it’s fast turning and fun.
