Mitre 10 Mega and Nelson App have teamed up to Light Up Nelson.

The competition was run by a radio station for more than a decade but it didn’t take it up this year, leaving a hole for those taking part. So Mitre 10 Mega and Nelson App have decided to make finding the houses easy and offer up some prizes for good measure.

A list and map of all participating homes is now available in the Nelson App.

Once you’ve visited them all, you can also vote for your favourite via the app. There are three different prizes up for grabs, a $250 Mitre 10 Mega voucher for best house, a $250 voucher for the house with the most votes, and a $100 Mitre 10 Mega voucher that will go to one lucky voter.

Nelson man Terry Sutton has been lighting up his Tory St home for nine years and says he’s delighted to have the promotion for those who do make the effort.

“Just to have that promotion so people know where to go is great, it’s great that we have something.”

Terry says he spends six days a week for an entire month to set up his lighting display, which is set to music.

“It does take a while, but it’s worth it. When you see the smiles it’s worth it.”

He says Christmas Eve is the busiest night of the year but Saturday night just gone was also “flat out”.

Murray Leaning from Mitre 10 Mega says they were keen to be a part of spreading some Christmas cheer.

“Light Up Nelson brings so much joy and Christmas spirit to the community, I was shocked to see that it wasn’t being supported this year, and we here at Mitre 10 MEGA Nelson decided we needed to keep that Christmas magic going for the kids, especially. We’ve all got families, and do the tour every year, so we had to make it happen.”

“Our Helping Hands program has partnered with the Nelson App, and Bev Hollis’s Unofficial Light Up Nelson group. We will be providing prizes and sponsorship for the promotion of this great event for the next three years.”

Nelson App managing director Andrew Board says doing the competition through the app makes sense.

“The Nelson App now has now been downloaded by almost 10,000 people and it’s really easy to use when you’re out and about looking at the houses and ready to vote for your favourite.”

“We’ve already been contacted by some of the homeowners taking part and they’re rapt that Mitre 10 Mega has come on board to help create more interest.”

If you have a house that wants to be a part of Light Up Nelson but isn’t on our list, please email [email protected] and we’ll get it loaded for you.
