Nelson is buzzing ahead of the Makos’ Mitre 10 Cup opener at Trafalgar Park this evening.
In a replay of last year’s final, the Tasman Makos will host “the cousin down the road” Canterbury and Nelsonians are already getting excited.
NBS Nelson has had the Super Rugby trophy in its branch today and people have been streaming in to get a look at the trophy that was won earlier this month by the Crusaders, a team made up of both the Canterbury and Tasman regions.
NBS Nelson manager Peter Havill says its been great to see people get excited about the game.
“We’re quite excited for this season and it’ll be great to play Canterbury in this first game, I think we’re going to beat them, when you put a Mako shark against a Canterbury lamb, the shark will win every time.”
Tasman Rugby Union marketing manager Les Edwards says the almost 5000 tickets have already been sold with more being snapped up today at various locations around town, including NBS, Richmond Mall, Mitre 10 Mega and Nelson i-Site.
“It’s a great day and two great teams will be putting on a heck of a show so there’s no reason why people shouldn’t come down and get excited about the game.”
He says tickets are available on the gate from 5pm today. “There is no better game to get to, against our cousin down the road, we don’t call them big brother anymore, and the players are really excited too.”
Nelson’s CBD is also expected to be rocking after the game. Vic Brew Bar duty manager Leanne Majchrzak says they’re hoping to have a massive crowd of happy fans pouring through the doors after the match.
“Last season we had some pretty big crowds in after the games and it’d be great to see the same this year.”
