A 63-year-old man from the USA has been charged following the tragic crash on SH60 on Monday, where two people were killed and four people were seriously injured.
The man now faces charges of two counts of Careless driving causing death and four counts of Careless driving causing injury.
Yesterday, police identified Stephen Anthony Jayes aged 41 of Nelson as one of the two people killed in the crash. However, they are unable to release any further information about the identity of the second person at this time.
Senior Sergeant Blair Hall says Police would like to thank those services and members of the public who assisted.
“This was a very challenging scene and required a large coordinated approach from emergency services and support agencies.
“This crash has affected many families and our thoughts go out to these people.
Victim Support has been working with people affected and can be contacted on 0800 842 846 for anyone who witnessed the scene and requires support.
Police are continuing the investigation into the crash and have spoken to several witnesses.
“We would still like to speak to anyone that witnessed the actual crash and has not yet been spoken to by police,” says Blair.
“We would also like to view any footage that members of the public may have taken before emergency services have arrived.”
