Hard on the heels of its global Great Taste Awards accolade, Nelson-based peanut butter maker Pic’s Peanut Butter has received a ‘Highly Commended’ award at the hotly-contested Quality Food Awards in the UK.

The Quality Food Awards began in 1979, and are the most prestigious awards for food and drink products on sale in UK grocery outlets.

The 2016 awards were announced at a gala dinner and awards ceremony at the five-star Grosvenor House Hotel in London on November 10. Winners were chosen for the coveted awards across more than 80 categories. Celebrity chef and TV presenter Simon Rimmer and award-winning chocolatier and patisserie Will Torrent co-hosted the evening.

Pic’s Peanut Butter competed in the ‘Grocery – other’ category and was the only highly commended product awarded from the shortlist which also included Aldi Sweet Harvest Mixed Beans, Asda Mackerel in BBQ Sauce from LDH (La Doria), and Tesco Huevos Rancheros from Snack Food Poco Loco UK. The category winner was Asda Mackerel in BBQ Sauce.

“We’re all pretty chuffed,” said Pic Picot, owner of Pic’s Peanut Butter.

“It’s really important to us as we continue to grow and enter markets overseas, that we continue making peanut butter that’s really high quality. We want to be proud that people are eating our peanut butter. This award is a great acknowledgement for our hardworking Pic’s Peanut Butter team in New Zealand and the UK.”

The products are judged by a 200-strong expert panel of food-related experts from a wide range of backgrounds, and the awards are renowned throughout the industry for their rigorous and stringent judging process.

Judges debate and discuss the merits of each product using the following criteria: taste, flavour, texture, aroma, ingredients list, innovation, packaging, presentation and price point.
