At about 1am this morning, emergency services were called to assist with a mental health patient who had threatened to drown themselves in the sea near Atawhai Nelson.
The man phoned police to say he was in the Clifton School grounds.
Police, Coastguard, Surf Rescue, Land Search and Rescue, and a helicopter were called in to help locate the person.
The search took place in the Nelson Haven over three hours and ended when the patient was located by a police canine unit, cold and asleep under a house nearby.
