The weather is expected to turn sour this afternoon, following a severe thunderstorm watch issued by MetService that covers Nelson, Buller and Westland.

“Thunderstorm activity in western Nelson, Buller and Westland north of about Greymouth is expected to increase this afternoon with the approach and passage of a front across central and northern New Zealand.”

severe thunderstorm watchThe watch covers the possibility for heavy rain, large hailstones and strong wind gusts of 110km or stronger.

“There is a moderate risk some of these thunderstorms could be severe from this afternoon until late tonight with westerly winds gusting stronger than 110km/hr.”

Residents should be cautious as wind this strong can cause structural damage, including trees and power lines, and may make driving hazardous.

nelsonlive.co.nz will post an update if the severe weather watch is updated to a warning.
