The future of Golden Bay’s 117-year-old grandstand is still on shaky ground following discussion on the development of the area’s recreation park.
The community and council were divided in a meeting earlier this week in Takaka but council have decided to submit an application and hand the decision over to Heritage New Zealand.
The application requests a value assessment but a final decision from Heritage New Zealand is not expected for some months.
In the meantime, Councillor Judene Edgar says despite construction of the new facility continuing while the application is processed, the grandstand will remain in place.
“The meeting focused on the need to wait on the outcome of Heritage New Zealand.”
The grandstand was built in 1899 and because of it’s history many residents have been appealing to retain the building.
