Amidst the mournful aftermath of one man’s decision to go into an Orlando nightclub and start shooting, Nelson’s main street lit up with colour in remembrance of the victims.

Q Youth led a March for Orlando that stopped traffic and turned heads up one of Nelson’s main streets.

Beginning at 10am this morning with a karakia at the Nelson I-site, around 60 people donned the colours of the rainbow and walked up Trafalgar St.

At the top, marchers paused for a minutes silence before listening to a poem and laying down flowers and flags in remembrance of the victims.

Nelson’s Izzy Clark was among the marches and says was with friends when she heard heard the news.

“It’s horrifying and heartbreaking that someone could do that, we forget that homophobia is still an issue but this is a reminder that it’s still very prevalent.”
