Throwback Thursday: Bishopdale Chapel

The Bishopdale Chapel has stood proudly amnogst the trees atop Waimea Road for the last 139 years.

The chapel is registered with the New Zealand Historic Places Trust and was built from kauri in 1877 and consecrated in the same year by Bishop Suter as the Chapel of Bishopdale Theological College.

The name was apparently chosen because the chapel was built for use as a student’s chapel as well as to accommodate those in the neighbourhood.
