Another stolen car was set alight in Nelson early this morning.

It brings the total number of stolen cars burnt this week to five in just four days.

The latest incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning after a stolen car was used as a battering ram at Big Barrel Liquor Store in Gloucester St. It was later set alight on Quebec Rd in Washington Valley at some time after 6am.

Big Barrel owner Ranbir Singh says the incident occurred at around 4am and caused damaged to the roller door and a small amount of alcohol was taken.

Nelson Fire Service officer Craig Davies say they attended the latest fire just before 7am.

“This isn’t a good situation, people’s cars are getting stolen and torched and looking at the skid marks around the place they are pretty lethal people.”

Nelson response sergeant Kyle Bruning says investigations are ongoing.

“Its an active investigation, we’re after help from the public to be vigilant and help us catch these people and its a criminal offence that they will be held accountable for.

“We’re obviously concerned that there’s been several vehicles stolen over the last couple of weeks, we’re really wanting to push the public to lock their vehicles and report any suspicious activity.”
