The amps are pumping, the crowd are on their feet and the lights are flashing at the first heat of the 2016 Smokefree Rockquest.

The competition is New Zealand’s only nationwide, live, all original, youth music competition and the five soloists and 21 bands are bringing their best to the stage for a spot at regionals and then finals.

Groups from Waimea, Nelson, Garin and Nayland College are competing with Motueka High School, Golden Bay High School and Nelson College for Girls for the top ten spots that will move to the next round.

The regional heats run from May 13 until July 2, with the top regional bands and solo/duos submitting video footage for selection to play off at the national Smokefree Rockquest in September.

Check out www.nelsonlive.co.nz on Monday for a video of the night.
