A body was found in Nelson today by a group of workers out to lunch.

Five community workers took their lunch break in Branford Park on Matai Road around 12:30pm when one member of the group called into a public toilet.

Making a chilling discovery, the person who entered the toilet found a man unresponsive on the floor of the bathroom.

One man who was part of the working group, Peter Roera, described how the deceased was given a nudge and asked if he was OK but did not move or respond.

The group alerted emergency services who pronounced the man dead.

A police spokesman said the incident has been referred to the coroner and was not being treated as suspicious.

“We can’t confirm until we hear back from the coroner, but for all intents and purposes, it looks like a medical event,” the spokesman said.
