Bennett on podium in California

Nelson cyclist George Bennett has recorded one of his best results on the pro-tour, powering up a tough climb near Santa Barbara to finish third on the queen stage of the Amgen Tour of California on Wednesday.

George, who rides for  Dutch team Lotto NL Jumbo, was 25 seconds behind stage winner, Julian Alaphilippe of Etixx Quickstep who finished the 167.5km third stage in 4 hour 36 minutes 59 seconds. It is George’s best placings on a major tour event following a fourth placing in the Vuelta a Espana last year.

George is now third in the general classification of the Tour of California after three stages, 31 seconds behind tour leader Julian Alaphilippe. The eight stage tour concludes on Monday New Zealand time.
