NRL Warriors come to Nelson

Warriors captain, Simon Mannerring will have an epic battle on home turf, come February 20.

This morning it was announced that the Vodafone Warriors and St George will clash at Trafalgar Park for their final preseason game.

Match organiser, Aldo Miccio says conversations to organise a match started about two and a half years ago.

“To bring rugby NRL to Nelson has been almost three years in the making and I’m over the moon that it’s finally happening,” says Aldo.

“The Warriors said, ‘we want this, you want this so we’ll make sure whatever game we do get is in Nelson’.”

“They are really excited about coming to Nelson and they’re really excited about providing the opportunity for Simon Mannerring to have a homecoming after what has been an incredible career with the Warriors and the Kiwis.”

Never before has there been the opportunity to celebrate Motueka lad Simon Mannerring who Aldo reckons will go down as one of the greatest captains in New Zealand.

“To give this opportunity to him and be able to celebrate his successes… I don’t want to say it’s been long overdue, but it’s been long overdue.”

The Warriors have never played in Nelson since the mid 80s but Aldo says that if all goes well it’s likely to be an annual event.

Kick off is at 5pm and a curtain raiser match will be played around 3pm between the Tasmsn Titans and the West Coast, allowing people to make a whole day of it.

Aldo says they’re expecting a near sell-out crowd.

“Wether it be league, football, hockey or basketball supporters, all of Nelson will get behind this and come to see an NRL match for the first time in the region.”

The Warriors fly in on Wednesday and they leave on Sunday while St George are having a camp here so they’ll fly in on the weekend prior and be here all week. Both teams will be interacting with the community in several events which have yet to be confirmed.
