Jon Toogood, the lead singer of Shihad visited Tahunanui School this morning to lend an inspiring hand to the local school band.

The visit was part of a mentoring program set up by the New Zealand Music Commission which sees Jon and other musicians visiting schools across New Zealand.

Jon spent the morning working with the school band – Tahunanui Tunes, on their original song, titled ‘Me & You’ as well as developing their ideas for a new school song.

The band, fresh from performing at BandQuest, is made up of ten students and ranges from xylophones to bongo drums and everything in between.

Jon also met with next year’s band, gave the school advice for their music department and performed several songs for the senior syndicate.

Tahunanui School’s music teacher, Kate Sara applied for the mentoring. “I can’t believe we got it, it’s such a big opportunity.”

Kate says the students were so excited to meet Jon and share their music.

“They are musicians, they’re writing their own music, they’re producing their own music and now they’re sharing it with musicians so that’s very cool.”
