The Family Snow Day is the new event in this year’s Winterruption festival, with a 20m snow toboggan luge ride giving kids the opportunity to ride down a custom built snow run.
The second edition of Winterruption will see Richmond hosting big screen movies, an old time dance, kids activities, cooking demonstrations, fashion displays, fitness classes and the family snow day to entice people to come out of winter hibernation.
Cooking demonstrations return to the programme, with local head chef’s from the Wooden Spoon Cafe and The Cellar Door @ Waimea Estate in to share their top tips on how to prepare and cook hearty and nutritious winter feeds on a budget.
The Richmond Mall is also catering for the kids with a series of free weekday activities on offer including cookie baking, mask making and music making with Kath Bee.
Retail stores have bought to the festival mood, offering sales and discount bargains on their winter merchandise.
“People tend to go into hibernation mode over the winter months, with not a lot of reason to get out and about,” says Tasman District Council Recreation and Partnerships Officer Paul McConachie.
“Winterruption is an opportunity to break that cycle and celebrate all things associated with winter. The festival offers something for everyone, with some unique activities and events not seen in Richmond before”.
Winterruption is organised by the Tasman District Council and Richmond Unlimited, with support from the Richmond Mall, Sport Tasman, Mediaworks and town centre businesses.
Winterruption will be held from June 8-14.
