A burning car with human remains in it was found down a bank near the start of the Whangamoa Reserve earlier this afternoon.

Both Nelson and Hira fire appliances attended the scene along with a large number of police. Hira Rural Fire Force were first on the scene arriving at around 2pm.

Nelson senior fire officer, Craig Davies, says getting down to the fire was quite a logistical feat for fire crew.

“The car has gone about 30 metres down, it’s upside down and it has caught fire. We had to set up our line rescue gear and we had to propel down the bank with a high pressure hose which we extinguished the fire with.”

Police are investigating the cause of the incident but Craig says it is looking very suspicious.

“We’ve got our command vehicle set up here for the night.”
