A toe-ball clamp did nothing to stop the theft of a Nelson couple’s caravan yesterday afternoon.

Jenny and Ian Cunningham came home to find their Avondale harrier caravan missing from behind their back section property on North Rd, in The Wood.

Jenny says she is trying to track down the thieves and has received a number of reports about who may have stolen the caravan.

“Neighbours down the street saw it being towed down North Rd. They’re 99 per cent sure it’s a Toyota four wheel drive. They said it was a rusty, reddy brown coloured, older type four wheel drive.”

She says she is surprised they managed to tow it away at all as the tow ball was clamped down and caravan chained up.

“We reckon they have done something to tie it to the back of their vehicle or chain it on to their four wheel drive. It was parked securely behind our house, you can’t see it because we’re on a back section. I think they had sussed out our place before they came and nabbed it.”

Police have been contacted and Jenny is hoping to hear back from them today. Jenny believes the caravan may have been headed for Christchurch.

“A Sollys driver reckons he saw it going through the Lewis Pass yesterday afternoon.”

Anyone with further information should contact police on 5463840. The caravan number plate is L179Q.
