Ring girls ready to rumble

The boxers aren’t the only ones volunteering to get in the Fight 4 Victory ring this Saturday – three “ring girls” will also do their bit for the cause.

Renee McConochie, Anthea Shearer and Ursula Hubbard have volunteered to carry the “ring cards” indicating what round is coming up. They were approached to do it by their friend Hazel Trethowen, who is fighting in the event.

They say they were keen to get involved to help out the cause. “Plus, I want to watch the boxing,” says Anthea.

Outfits for the ring girls have been donated by House of Purcell in the City Centre Arcade. Owner Zar Fa’avae says that her partner trains at the gym and was keen to support the work they do. “It’s a really cool initiative so we just wanted to help where we could.”

The three girls say they’re not too sure what to expect on the night, but they’re looking forward to it.

Fight 4 Victory organiser Paul Hampton says he’s delighted the girls have come on board. “It’s great that another part of Nelson is getting behind the cause and putting their time into the event. It’s just another piece of the puzzle now in place.”
