A CCTV camera is to be installed in Victory Square after funding was secured through the Canterbury Community Trust.

A safety survey had identified the need for a camera in the area after residents identified it as one of the places they found the least safe.

The Victory Community Centre’s Keep Victory Safe project submitted a presentation to council’s community services committee late last year to request the camera the be installed.

The council matched half of the Canterbury Community Trust’s funding to reach the $10,264.40 needed to run the police monitored camera for three years.

Chair of the Community Services Committee, Councillor Pete Rainey, says the council is happy to be involved in a process that betters the central Victory Square environment.

“The provision of CCTV will help to reduce crime and antisocial behaviour. The community has requested this and we are happy to play our part,” says Councillor Rainey.

Gayle Petch of Keep Victory Safe says the organisation is delighted to hear of the funding.

“This shows that the voice of the Victory community is being heard and Keep Victory Safe is just a conduit to that. [The camera] will make many who use the park feel safer knowing that unacceptable behaviour is being closely monitored and that’s a win win for everyone.”
