Road safety demonstrations are being held this week with a focus on stopping distances.
Today a demonstration will take place on Tipahi Street between Tukuka and Motueka Street between 6 and 6.45.
In each demonstration a trained driving instructor will show how speed affects stopping distances. There will be three runs at different speeds with the driver breaking at the same time. The car will travel at 20kmh, 50kmh and 60kmh.
Cardboard models will be used in the 60Kmh run to show how an extra 10Kmh can affect the drivers ability to stop for a pedestrian.
The demonstrations are also intended to remind children the dangers of stepping out in front of cars.
Keep Victory Safe, Civil Defense and Citizens Advice Bureau will be available for talks and there will also be a driveway safety demo.
Families are advised to pack a picnic and a sausage sizzle will be on site as well as music.
