Illegal hunting has increased in rural areas and Nelson Bays Police are warning landowners to stay vigilant.

Sergeant Rob Crawford says  sheep carcases were found recently in forestry near Wai-iti and police would like to hear from anyone who has lost black headed sheep in recent weeks.

Reports of spotlighting in the Dovedale area have increased and it is believed that the people involved have access to night vision and silencers.

“People wandering around in the dark with firearms in areas they are not authorised to be in is a huge risk for other members of the community and we take this very seriously.

“Every legitimate firearms owner is well aware of their responsibilities and the penalties they may face if they’re found to be breaching their licence conditions,” he said.

Nelson Police have revoked two firearms licenses for unlawful hunting already this year.

Anyone who sees suspicious activity is urged to call 111 immediately.

Information can also be given by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
