Chilly conditions don’t put off sea swimmers

A cool southerly and fresh snow on the mountains put the chill into the Blue September charity sea swim that raised funds for the Prostate Cancer Foundation held in Port Nelson on Sunday.

Fifty-three swimmers braved the 13 degree Celsius water to compete in the 600 metres swim, with some swimmers showing more courage than others by not wearing a wetsuit. Hayden Squance won the race in 5 minutes 52 seconds, just ahead of a chasing pack that included Matt Hansen, Simon Kneebone and Richard Ussher. Kerry Mathieson was the fastest woman, finishing in 6 minutes 37 seconds.

The Port Nelson Summer Sea Swim series starts on November 6. Swims are held each Thursday night at 6.15pm from the Nelson Yacht Club ramp on Wakefield Quay.
