Richmond Athletic will face a side from Christchurch if they can beat Nelson College in the second round of the ASB Chatham Cup on June 2.
Richmond Athletic were drawn against Nelson College in the second round of the 91 year old competition, the longest running in New Zealand football, after both teams won on the weekend.
Nelson College beat Blenheim club side Central Pirates 4-2 on Saturday, before Richmond put three goals past FC Nelson to win 3-0.
The winner of the Richmond versus Nelson College clash will join three other Christchurch sides in the next round, before it opens up to a nation-wide draw.
Richmond coach Marc Evans was pleased with his side’s performance, comfortably seeing off FC Nelson thanks to two goals from Jamie Cresswell and a third to Gavin Peattie. “It’s what we expected. We’re playing nice football and the boys are confident,” he says.
And while a win in the next round would give Richmond the opportunity to test itself against a Mainland Premier League side, Marc says the focus is still on the Nelson Pine Industries division one comp.
