Usually a “run in, run out” exercise, Tahunanui School’s mid-winter swim on Thursday was probably its longest and warmest ever.
While some shot off for a hot shower and a Milo, most of the 100 students, including Emma Newson, Zara Stevenson and Sam Moritz (pictured), had to be encouraged to leave the water, clearly happy and warm enough.
Principal Paul Drummond believed it was one of the warmest mid-winter swims in the school’s history. “Given the forecast it was quite a pleasant surprise,” he says. “You don’t have to convince most kids to do this, most of them want to do it, it’s like a rite of passage here at Tahunanui School to say that you’ve done it.”
Paul described the annual swim as a “fun event” with a bit of school spirit thrown in. “We’ve had some really cold days and we timed this perfectly.”
