It is now two from two for Waimea Old Boys, with the side chalking up a win over new boys Kahurangi Hawks in Motueka on Saturday.
Played in wet conditions, both sides struggled to break down each other’s defence and the game wasn’t sealed until the final moments when Waimea lock Tevita Cavubati crashed over for the only try of the match and stretch the final score to 16-3. Earlier Billy, playing at first five, kicked three penalty goals to give his side a deserved lead 9-3 lead. Assistant coach Nick Marquet says Dan Hytongue and Sha’non Temita were stand outs in the Waimea pack. “We tried to take them on when we had the chance but it was tough conditions and they defended really well.”
Kaide Whiting missed the game with a sore shoulder so Josh Rutledge moved in on to the halfback position, allowing Ben Jeffrey to slip into the midfield.
This Saturday Waimea will return to Jubilee Park to host defending champions Nelson. Nick says they side is confident it can continue with its perfect start to the season. “We’re not over-confident or anything like that. But we’re in a good space and feeling like we’re doing a good job. Nelson is never easy so this Saturday will be tough but we want to carry on winning.”
The game kicks off at 3pm.
