Nelson College for Girls school leavers continued their annual tradition of jumping off the wharf in their uniforms.
The tradition is similar to one made famous by Wellington Girls College and is believed to have first occurred in Nelson around three years ago. Each year, Year 12 students at Wellington Girls College jump into the Frank Kitts Park lagoon to celebrate the transition to mufti.
Whitney Orange, who is a Year 13 at Nelson College for Girls, says their leap always occurs on the final day of school – the last time each Year 13 student would wear their uniforms.
“Well most people wouldn’t wear them again,” says Whitney.
“I reckon it’s a cool tradition and something different. I don’t know any other school in Nelson that does anything similar.”
Cold seas and gusty winds greeted the 130 girls who jumped off the wharf this year.
NCEA exams began for all senior students across the region last week.
