After removing Marlborough for a paltry 120 runs Nelson went to lunch all high fives and smiles, but lunch couldn’t have sat too well with many as Nelson teetered on the brink of disaster early in its chase.
The Newman Shield representative 50 over clash on a low and slow Saxton Oval pitch looked to be all over after Marlborough were taken apart by the Nelson bowlers and fielders.
But Nelson’s openers both went for a duck and the rest of the top order – many of whom were in great form for their club’s the day before – weren’t too far behind.
Dan Cooper, Marty Kain, Grey Hay and Ryan Edwards all failed to fire. But captain BJ Barnett and New Zealand under 20 representative Connor Neymes resurrected the innings, guiding Nelson to 53.
Ricky Edwards joined Connor at the crease after BJ was given out leg before wicket and after a quick fire 34 it was up to Matt Macquet and Connor to finish off the visitors and give Nelson an important early season win.
Man of the match was undoubtedly Connor who top scored with 42.
Marty and Luke Toynbee were the top Nelson bowlers, taking three wickets apiece.
