Calling all wannabe green-thumbs.

A Brook resident is inviting her neighbours to the suburbs’ community gardens this Saturday in an effort to boost the number of people using the Waimarama Brook Community Gardens.

Helen Lynch is a regular user of the gardens and says she would like to see more families using the facility to plant vegetables, meet their neighbours, learn about growing and to have fun.

So she, along with other users of the gardens, are planning a get-together at the gardens this Saturday from 1pm. She is inviting people from all over the region to come along, but would especially like to see people from the Brook area come and use their gardens.

“Ten years ago this place was packed full of people and it still gets used a lot for the education but I’d like to see more people come along and learn how to grow vegetables by doing it alongside other families from the Brook.”

The gardens are already well known for hosting educational workshops.

Helen is hoping enough people will regularly come along plant, grow and eat lunch together every Saturday. She would also like to build a clay pizza oven and do some general repairs around the gardens. “It is an opportunity to meet people, learn to grow food, families to meet up and have gatherings,” she says. “Most towns are begging for community gardens and here we have one and I think more people needing to use it.”

To take part in learning how to grow and being involved in the Brook Community Gardens, pop down to the gardens this Saturday at 1pm.
