Gearing up for art expo

Nelson is taking its reputation as an arts capital rather seriously, preparing to host a massive art expo that organisers hope will lead the way for South Island artists.

Nic Foster says the concept of art expos

is big in Europe and other centres in New Zealand and it was about time Nelson followed suit.

“We have so many wonderful artists here in Nelson and this will be a great way for them to sell some work and get noticed by dealers.”

Fifteen art dealers from the North Island will be flown down for the expo which will include the works of 98 artists, most of those from Nelson.

The Nelson Art Expo will be held at the Trafalgar Centre and Nic says an onsite cafe and other activities will hopefully create a “buzz” around the event.

“We want people to come along and enjoy the day. Every time a piece of art sells the artist will replace it, so the entire expo could change three or four times by the end of the two days.”

The expo is being held on July 28 and 29. Tickets to enter are $5 per adult and Nic says if this event goes well he would like to see it staged again.
